Test–Retest Reliability for a Spiritual Gifts Assessment

A practical guide to repeat administration, time intervals, stability coefficients, change interpretation, and research design for spiritual-gifts assessments.

Adults moving together through a garden of attentive Christian formation

Decide what should remain stable

A spiritual-gifts profile may contain enduring patterns and season-sensitive expression. Define the expected stability of each score before testing. Resonance may move differently from practice or stewardship when opportunity and responsibility change.

Choose an interval with purpose

A short interval of one to three weeks reduces the chance of real change while allowing memory effects to fade. Longer intervals can examine developmental stability. Record ministry events, training, life transitions, and new opportunities that may influence scores.

Keep administration comparable

Use the same instrument version, instructions, device support, setting guidance, and scoring rules. Record completion time, interruptions, accessibility support, and whether participants saw their first results before the second administration.

Calculate more than correlation

Report intraclass correlation coefficients when absolute agreement matters, rank correlations for profile ordering, mean change, confidence intervals, and limits of agreement. A high correlation can coexist with a systematic upward or downward shift.

Review stability at several levels

Examine each gift total, each evidence dimension, leading-gift overlap, rank displacement, and profile similarity. Aggregate stability can conceal important movement within an individual profile.

Separate measurement noise from growth

Use standard errors of measurement, reliable-change methods, and contextual notes to judge whether a difference is larger than expected score fluctuation. Interpret change alongside behavior, community evidence, and opportunity.

Protect independent responding

When the research question concerns stability, consider withholding detailed first results until the retest is complete. If immediate results are central to the participant experience, document that exposure and interpret possible learning effects.

Use findings to improve the process

Unstable items may require wording review, clearer time frames, better construct boundaries, or additional items. Preserve version history and repeat the analysis after revisions with a new sample.

PURPOSE IN PRACTICE

Awaken the heart. Steward what God has placed within you.

This experience helps people hear with humility, discern through Scripture and wise Christian community, respond faithfully, and develop gifts that serve people and honor God.
